Low Carb Diet Terms:
  • Overeating - the persistent consumption of excess food in relation to the energy that the person expends, leading to weight gain and often to obesity.
  • Recommended daily calorie intake values - 2500 (food) calories/day for men, and 2000 (food) calories/day for women. Children, sedentary and older people require fewer calories, physically active people require more.
  • Banned weight loss products (U.S. FDA) - FDA has banned 111 ingredients once found in over-the-counter diet products. These substances, which contain alcohol, caffeine, dextrose, and guar gum, have not proved effective in weight-loss or appetite suppression.
  • Pritikin Diet - a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet similar to the Atkins diet, based on the theory that we have an instinct to eat fat that was developed in the early days of man. It is alleged that the ready availability of fat now causes us to instinctively overeat it.
  • Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG), also known as Stomach stapling, has been the most common restrictive operation for weight control. It limits the amount of food a patient can eat at one time and slows passage of the food.
