Today's Low Carb Diet Headlines

Low Carb Diet Terms:
  • Soluble fiber food sources - include legumes, (peas, soybeans, and other beans), oats, some fruits (esp. apples, bananas) and berries, certain vegetables (esp. broccoli and carrots), root vegetables (e.g., potatoes and yams, but the skins are insoluble fiber), and psyllium seed.
  • 1 lb of fat (454 g) - approximately equal to 3500 food calories.
  • Pritikin Diet - a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet similar to the Atkins diet, based on the theory that we have an instinct to eat fat that was developed in the early days of man. It is alleged that the ready availability of fat now causes us to instinctively overeat it.
  • Banned weight loss products (U.S. FDA) - FDA has banned 111 ingredients once found in over-the-counter diet products. These substances, which contain alcohol, caffeine, dextrose, and guar gum, have not proved effective in weight-loss or appetite suppression.
  • Eating disorder - a mental illness in which the main problem is a person eats in a way which disturbs their physical health.
